Use of word ‘smart’ was dumb

I have always read and admired your newspaper for its fair and balanced editorial policies. I am, however, disturbed to see a journalistic error in style in the June 23 issue.

You are no doubt aware that language can be used to communicate clearly or to propagandize. Various parties, attempting to redefine certain words and embed within them a propagandistic power are also undermining the communicative ability of our language to communicate clearly. read more

Sound is better location for LNG facility

Your editorial “Floating a new idea” in the May 5 edition regarding locating a liquefied natural gas (LNG) platform in the vicinity of (or at) Plum Island does not appear to be a good idea. LNG tankers are very large vessels and the process of tethering one in the vicinity of the tricky waters of the race would be a risky undertaking. read more

Clean fuel needs governors’ support

Your editorial “Floating a new idea” (May 5 edition) on the Broadwater Energy facility in Long Island Sound is right on track. With a gallon of gasoline at $4 and the cost of home-heating oil also at $4 per gallon where does the Northeast turn for relief? One source of relief comes in the form of natural gas, which is less polluting than other forms of fossil fuels and which displaces the consumption of oil in a number of applications.

Article failed to note small-business investments in city

The article, “Stayin’ alive: The fight to prosper on Mamaroneck Avenue,” which was published in the May 12 edition of the Westchester County Business Journal failed to take into account the growing number of new small businesses that have chosen to invest in downtown White Plains, or the current merchants who are reinvesting in their businesses to meet the changing demands of the marketplace.

Reducing Westchester’s carbon dioxide emissions

Your informative March 3 story, “Greenhouse gas key to county initiative,” talks about many positive steps Westchester businesses are taking and the importance of reducing greenhouse emissions in the county overall. However, all of these good efforts will essentially be wiped away if County Executive Spano has his way and closes Indian Point.

Entergy committed to safety, emergency planning

There has been recent criticism of Indian Point-operator Entergy’s commitment to public safety. This statement provides a different point of view about Entergy’s dedicated partnership and sense of responsibility to public health and safety.

Greenburgh supervisor seeks input

This letter is being written to invite members of the business community to contact me with suggestions and comments regarding ways the town of Greenburgh can be more responsive to your needs during the next two years.

Robert B. Goldberg

There are major flaws in your editorial’s recommendation to lower health care costs by having doctors post their fees (“Putting a price on health care,” Oct. 16). Posted fees would have no affect on the cost of health care under the current system. This is so because the vast majority of physicians don’t determine how much they get paid; insurers do. Both private and government health insurers set the rates they pay to reimburse physicians for their services. These same behemoth forces also dictate how much patients will pay for premiums and co-pays, and even, in some cases, whether they will get care at all.

Being far behind on my reading, I just read the editorial “The cost of war” in the July 30th edition of the Westchester County Business Journal.
