Two leaders in business and health care in Westchester County say presidential candidates from both parties in their campaign proposals have failed to tackle the most critical issues facing the nation in health-care reform

The following is a brief description of the health-care platforms of the leading candidates in the 2008 presidential election.

 

Outside of the War in Iraq, arguably the most heated debate among the 2008 presidential candidates is the quest for affordable health care.

 

Judging by wealthy capitalists backing his presidential campaign, U.S. Sen. Christopher Dodd of Connecticut has not scared off all businesses with his proposal for universal health care.

 


Hudson Valley Hospital Center and Entergy recently held a drill for responding to a potential medical emergency at Indian Point.

 


Last year, the Westchester County Department of Senior Programs and Services kicked off a “Livable Community” initiative to begin establishing a community in which people can age in a senior-friendly environment and live meaningful and purposeful lives. Aspects of such a community include transportation, housing, recreation, community service and supportive services.

 


Elant, the region’s biggest senior health-care provider, has teamed up with the American Red Cross of Greater New York’s Orange-Sullivan chapter to prepare for the “next emergency.”

 


Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie has another trophy to add to its many awards: It has been named one of the top 41 hospitals in the United States by Leapfrog Group, based in Washington, DC.

 


At a press conference in his Kingston office Oct. 1, U.S. Rep. Maurice Hinchey, D-Hurley, said the Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act, approved by Congress, would provide more than 10 million children from modest-income families with health insurance.

 


Stroke Patients will have access to fast, state-of-the-art medical care at Lawrence Hospital Center in Bronxville, the hospital reports.

 


IntegraMed America Inc., an operator of fertility centers and vein care clinics, has realigned its Purchase-based business to accommodate the growth of its fertility operations and a recent company acquisition.
