Cappelli donates for diabetes

On Nov. 13, Louis R. Cappelli, chairman of the Louis Cappelli Foundation board of directors, joined John R. Spicer, president and CEO of Sound Shore Medical Center (SSMC), for a $1 million check presentation.

The Cappelli Foundation donated $500,000 to SSMC for the creation of the Jaycee Lynn Cappelli Diabetes Center, which will treat and educate patients dealing with juvenile and adult diabetes. The 6,000-square-foot facility is named for Cappelli’s 10-year-old niece, who has type 1 diabetes. The center is scheduled to open in the spring. The remaining $500,000 donation will be used for SSMC’s capital campaign.

Port Chester Restaurant draws crowds

Italian restaurant Nessa on Main Street in Port Chester has been drawing crowds and receiving critical praise since opening. The line out the door on Saturday nights is a sight to behold in this food-heavy, patron-light part of town. Even weekdays draw discerning palates from all over with hungry masses crossing the county’s borders to sample the goods. On a recent Monday night at 7 p.m. Robert Squeri, and 40 of his employees, occupied a large area of Nessa’s main dinning room.

Squeri, vice president and global creative director for Kao Brands, a beauty brands company based in Stamford, Conn., that handles John Frieda and Andrew Jergens products, brought his colleagues to Nessa for a celebratory dinner marking a successful year.

“We love this restaurant,” said Squeri. “We come here often for dinner. It’s always a lot of fun.”

American Legends

From left, Mark Rubin, co-owner of American Legends, New York Ranger Ryan Callahan and co-owner Donna Rubin. The three got together to pose with the cake celebrating the 1107 Central Park Ave. in Scarsdale store’s 15th anniversary Nov. 11. Callahan signed autographs, got his picture taken and greeted throngs of Rangers fans to help the Rubins celebrate the milestone anniversary. The Rubins are also mainstays of regionwide efforts toward finding a cure for ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Garden of Hope

Dr. Rick Stafford, director of neonatology; Pound Ridge resident Becki Fleischer, president of the Junior League of Northern Westchester; Bedford Hills resident Christina Dochtermann also of the Junior League; sculptor Ludwig “Doc” Dochtermann of Bedford; and Joel Seligman, president and CEO of Northern Westchester Hospital, at the unveiling of the hospital’s Garden of Hope.

A 16-foot copper tree composed of 300 individual metal parts was dedicated recently next to the third-floor neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Northern Westchester Hospital.

The “Tree of Tranquility” and a copper sun were created by Bedford resident and sculptor Ludwig “Doc” Dochtermann. The installation was coordinated by the Junior League of Northern Westchester, a Bedford-based nonprofit of women, under the leadership of Christina Dochtermann. An accompanying rock garden was designed and donated by landscape architect Bob Schweitzer of Lasting Impressions in Mount Kisco. A wall backdrop was painted by CertaPro Painters. A sleeping room for mothers was redecorated by Vera Kessler of Nursery 101. And paving stones and gravel were donated by Bedford Stone and Bedford Gravel. The pediatric department of Mount Kisco Medical Group was the signature sponsor of the project.
