Fly on the Wall

Read all about it

Adam Stone, Examiner publisher, foreground, and Martin Wilbur, editor-in-chief.

A group of area journalists is preparing for the September 11 launch of two new community weeklies covering Mount Kisco and Pleasantville: The Examiner.

The Examiner’s editorial and business team consists mostly of former employees from North County News, a Yorktown-based weekly, and The Journal News.

“The media universe has expanded to the point where we know what happens in Iraq moments after it occurs, yet we do less and less reporting on our neighborhoods and our neighbors,” Managing Editor Danny Lopriore said in a prepared statement.

The free papers one targeting Pleasantville, the other Mount Kisco and both called The Examiner will publish each Tuesday and be distributed at area businesses and other locations.

Labor Day respites

Seamus Otuairisce shares some quality time with his dog, Driver.

The lads step from the shaded oasis of The Heritage on McLean Avenue in Yonkers for a bit of conviviality in the sunshine beside the pub’s Irish-themed mural on Labor Day. Just a hurley shot away, Seamus Otuairuisce, 45, and his dog, Diver, take a break in Van Cortlandt Park. Diver’s mother was an Irish wolfhound and his father was a bulldog from a good neighborhood, Otuairuisce reports. Otuairuisce was raised in the very same pub favored by William Butler Yeats “Daily,” he insists at Innisfree. (A hurley is the stick used in hurling and a common site in the heavily Irish neighborhood.)

Going once …

Nationals hurler Mike Bacsik (756) and Padres right-hander Clay Hensley (755) have more in common than just the fraternity of the mound (sounds better than fraternity of the rubber). Now, they are written in Major League Baseball’s history books as accessories to Barry Bonds’ record-breaking, some have said juiced, home runs. Hank Aaron checked in via videotape, you may recall.

Bonds’ record-tying 755th and record-breaking 756th home run balls will show off their hides at Sotheby’s, 1334 York Ave., Manhattan, Sept. 5-14. Matt Murphy, owner of 756, will make a cameo at the event when the balls preview Sept. 5, 10 a.m. to noon in the Sotheby’s lobby.

The famed balls have been estimated by auction officials to fetch $200,000 for 755 and $500,000 for 756. And you thought buying a hot dog at Yankees Stadium was pricey. If you can’t make Sotheby’s to put in your bid, the online auction for the prizes will continue through Sept. 15 at www.scpauctions.com.
