Jazz flutist Torres to perform for VNS

Grammy Award- winning jazz flutist Nestor Torres will be the featured performer Thursday at a concert, cocktail reception and dinner hosted by Visiting Nurse Services in Westchester.

“An Evening with Nestor Torres” will celebrate National Home Care Month. The Nov. 8 event will begin with a cocktail hour at 6 p.m., followed by the dinner and concert at 7 p.m. at Abigail Kirsch’s Tappan Hill in Tarrytown.

After topping the Billboard contemporary jazz charts, Torres, a native of Puerto Rico and genre-crossing innovator on flute, saw his career abruptly halted by a near-fatal boating accident in 1990. Despite serious injuries, along with other setbacks related to the incident, Torres came back to record a string of best-selling albums and to perform and record with artists such as Gloria Estefan, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter.

Torres, who will receive an award from the White Plains nursing agency, credited visiting nurses with both his recovery at home and his career’s revival.

“With the care they gave me following my accident, their example gave me a renewed sense of mission and living, a renewed sense of purpose in my music and the work that I do,” he said. “I now make music to do more than just entertain, but also to heal, inspire and empower people, just as the nurses did for me.”
