Home and hearth for $95M

The co-founder of Liberty Travel reportedly has put his 263-acre Pound Ridge and Stamford, Conn., estate on the market for $95 million, possibly the highest asking price for a residential sale in the history of either New York or Connecticut.

Gilbert Haroche bought the Hillandale estate in 1992 for $6.7 million. The property was previously owned by Arthur Hays Sulzberger, publisher of The New York Times for three decades, and his wife, Iphigene, who was the daughter of Adolph Ochs, the man responsible for propelling The Times to prominence.

Haroche and his wife, Charlotte, doubled the size of the main house to 20,000 square feet and 23 rooms; and built a stone chapel. Four other residences are located on the land, which borders Westchester and Fairfield counties and which is partially assessed in both. The property includes a 5-acre private lake.

Sotheby’s International Realty is the listing agent.
