The weekday lunch patrons had gone back to their jobs in downtown White Plains when Anthony Goncalves stopped at the bar at his Peniche Tapas Restaurant to tend to one more business detail in what would be another 18-hour workday for the driven chef and restaurateur. A small scale sat on the marble bar beside a cardboard box bearing precious foreign cargo.

 

Despite a capital markets crisis brought on by the subprime mortgage fiasco and an uncertain economic outlook, the county’s real estate market shows more strengths than weaknesses going into 2008, in the view of most panelists at the RealShare Westchester County Conference last week in White Plains.

 

Sales of single-family houses in Westchester dropped nearly 9 percent in volume and the median price of an existing house in the county fell nearly 6 percent in October from the previous month, in contrast to a statewide trend that saw both October home sales and prices rebound from a sluggish September, according to the New York State Association of Realtors.

 

The living wage bill in Yonkers that would require an above-minimum wage for city government and certain city businesses may finally be resolved.

 

New York state and a Hudson River environmental group in Tarrytown have joined Westchester County in opposing the relicensing of two Indian Point nuclear power plants for numerous public safety, security and environmental reasons in petitions filed with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

 

This year, The Child Abuse Prevention Center of New York toasted 25 years of serving the Westchester community.
