Year-End Wrap-Up : Education, Training, Placement

College campuses across Westchester County and the Hudson Valley are going green, offering classes on the environment and hosting special events to raise awareness.

A federally financed labor initiative is scheduled to hold two meetings in Westchester this week to solicit ideas and feedback to prevent the region from suffering a shortage of qualified workers.

Founded more than a century ago on a mission of social justice, the YWCA today is an important provider of services to the poorer communities in the region. YWCAs now provide day care and after-school programs for working parents; free cancer screenings for women; parenting classes; programs discouraging teen pregnancy; child care services for parents attending family court; and even, in the case of Westchester, 185 affordable-housing units for single women.

Off-site training through videoconferencing or a company intranet became more prevalent in 2007 as the business world has become more globalized, some experts say.
