Focus : Eldercare & the Economics of Aging

As greater numbers of baby boomers care for aging loved ones, adult day-care centers are becoming an increasingly popular option.

Unbeknownst to many people, the federal Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 resulted in some significant changes to the eligibility requirements for Medicaid, which could impact the amount of Medicaid provided to qualifying seniors. Unfamiliarity with the regulations could be financially devastating.

Citing strong interest from potential investors, joint-venture partners and operators of senior-oriented housing has led the owners of The North Street Community housing complex in White Plains to enlist the services of a real estate firm to assist them in evaluating the various approaches being presented.

Over the past 30 years, medical and pharmaceutical advancements have increased baby boomers’ longevity by decades, far beyond that of their parents. In addition, many boomers married and had families at much later ages than their parents, thus creating what is frequently referred to as the “sandwich generation.”

The good news is that if you have a parent who needs to enter a nursing home in the lower Hudson Valley in the next few years, there should be a bed available.

Responding to a growing challenge for both the public and private sectors, two companies in Westchester County recently named to a best-100 list of employers have expanded their elder-care programs to ease the care-giver burden on their workers.

It’s 2027 and you’re reaching your golden years. You’re not alone. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, as a baby boomer you’ll be keeping company with more than 69 million people above the age of 65 – that’s a 75 percent increase over the same population today.

Aging at home and avoiding admission to an assisted-living facility or nursing home is a desire among most older people. But how to do it is a puzzle. Everyone ages differently and the needs of one person are likely to be vastly different from the needs of another. Luckily, there are as many solutions to the problems of senior citizens as there are differences in their needs. From getting assistance with household chores to finding full-time live-in care, a range of services exists that can allow people to live longer in their own homes.
