Miracle Ball gala slated
Group brings baseball to disabled youths

Founded in 1998 in Rockdale, Ga., the Miracle League provides the opportunity for children with disabilities to play baseball. In 2005 when Stephen Madey visited the original Miracle League facilities and saw the joy of the children at play, he knew he wanted to bring that happiness to Westchester.

According to Miracle League literature, Madey presented the idea to County Executive Andy Spano and county Parks Department Commissioner Joe Stout in January 2006. They promised not only to provide the field but the financing to build it. With a successful inaugural 2006 fall season, the league anticipates its 2007 season to be even greater.

Madey, a former musician who now works at the Blythedale Children’s Hospital in Valhalla, is a New Rochelle resident. He has also worked as an educator with disabled students.

On Nov. 3 the Miracle League of Westchester will host the Miracle Ball at the Rye Town Hilton in Rye Brook. The event will recognize participants and raise money to provide programming for the league.

According to Steven Madey, league executive director, this is the Westchester chapter’s first-ever attempt to put on a gala ball.

“All money that gets raised will go toward equipment and uniforms,” said Madey. “We want our people to have a good time and celebrate our first full year of operation.”

Madey also said the league is looking for a corporate sponsor.

Guests can look forward to a cocktail hour, live and silent auction and an eight-piece band. News 12 reporter Antoinette Biordi will be the emcee. Tickets are $250 per person.
