Polar Air ups Asian routes

Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings Inc. (AAWW), the Purchase-based company providing global air cargo services, will double its Polar subsidiary’s operations in Japan and expand its reach in North Asia following recent negotiations between the U.S. and Japanese governments.

Polar Air Cargo Worldwide Inc., has been granted six more flights to Japan, excluding Tokyo, with the right to fly to two foreign destinations beyond the new point in Japan.

Polar can choose its new Japanese destination and the service points outside the country. The company currently has six weekly flights to Tokyo with related service to one destination beyond Japan. The new agreement gives Polar a total 12 flights in Japan and 18 flights beyond.

“North Asia ­ particularly Korea, China and Japan ­ has been a significant area of development for Polar,” said Randy Clark, the subsidiary’s chief operating officer. “Now that we’ve been approved for additional frequencies and beyond rights to Japan, we look forward to continuing Polar’s growth.”

Assisting Polar in the business development were John Byerly, U.S. deputy assistant secretary of state, and Ryuhei Maeda, deputy director-general, Minister’s Secretariat, Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

AAWW is the parent company of Atlas Air Inc. and the majority shareholder of Polar Air Cargo Worldwide Inc. Through Atlas and Polar, AAWW operates the world’s largest fleet of Boeing 747 freighter aircraft.
