Congrats grads

Seated (from left): apprentices Katherine Palacio, Jennifer Susana, Zanita Grose, Nathalie Gonzalez, Diana Franco, Daisy Vembenil and Jackie Flooks.

White Plains Hospital Center held its second annual graduation ceremony Aug. 17 for local and area high school and college students who are participating in the hospital’s nurse apprentice program. The program is intended to help address the nursing shortage by introducing students to all aspects of the profession.

Certificates were presented to a group of seven apprentices who recently completed the eight-week, summer work-study session. In addition, they joined eight apprentices from last’s year’s program in sharing their experiences about what they learned by visiting a number of clinical areas at the hospital.

“(The) program is proving to be very successful in helping us to identify students from the area who are eager to learn about the nursing profession in a unique blend of instruction and hands-on experience,” said Jon B. Schandler, hospital president and CEO. “The program takes on increased urgency because the nursing shortage is getting worse, not better.”

On the Fly

Ann V. Athas is leaving her post as director of public relations for Hudson Valley Hospital Center in Cortlandt Manor after nearly 20 years.

Just about everyone at the Business Journal has worked with Ann from time to time over the years as she pitched stories on the hospital, arranged interviews and photo shoots with management, and accommodated our last-minute requests for comments.

Ann says she is retiring and relocating to Delaware, where she plans to launch a consulting business.

“I’m planning on keeping in touch,” Ann wrote in an e-mail announcing her plans. “Check out my Web site: www.inspirespeak.com.”

Good luck, Ann. You will be missed!

The President of Ireland at Ballsbridge

One of our reporters was on the fly in Ireland and caught these pix of the country’s President Mary Patricia McAleese at the Ballsbridge horse-jumping competition outside Dublin.

Vigil in bronze

The Gold Star Mothers statue does its part for patriotism in Yonkers’ Larkin Square on a recent morning, while the engines of commerce rev on the nearby waterfront. The monument, which was unveiled last fall, is dedicated to the mothers of men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the United States.
