Two legends in Scarsdale

Joakim Noah, in white T-shirt, and Corey Brewer, in green, sign basketballs for fans.

American Legends at 1107 Central Park Ave. in Scarsdale hosted an autograph signing July 26 featuring superstar cagers Corey Brewer and Joakim Noah.

Both played on the Florida Gators NCAA basketball champion teams of 2006 and 2007 and each was tourney best player, Noah in 2006 and Brewer in 2007.

Brewer was picked seventh by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the recent NBA draft and Noah ninth by the Chicago Bulls. American Legends co-owner Donna Rubin reported the pair signed 250 autographs in one hour.

“A smile never left Brewer’s face for the entire event and Noah was great with the kids,” she said. The event began 15 weeks of activities leading to the store’s 15th anniversary celebration Nov. 11.

Farewell to an old friend

Jack Raymond (Oct. 6, 1918 July 20, 2007)

It is with great regret that we say goodbye to our old friend and colleague Jack Raymond, former New York Times reporter and environmental activist.

Raymond’s career began as a news reporter on the battlefields of World War II, in Washington, D.C., at the White House and as a correspondent in Outer Mongolia. Later in life he became the first president and chief executive of the International Institute for Environmental Affairs (currently the International Institute for Environment and Development).

In the early 1990s, the Business Journal benefited from his professional expertise. “Jack Raymond was about the most passionate and enthusiastic newsperson I’ve ever met,” said Dee DelBello, publisher of the Business Journals. “He came to speak with our editorial staff in 1991.

“When he walked into our office he said, ‘My, it’s so quiet,’ because he came from the era of green shades and clicking typewriters.

“He visited (our offices) on a number of occasions and was always available for phone calls. He introduced us to prize-winning photographer James Karales and writer Martin Schrader from Hearst Publications (both men are deceased). We had these real international experts with us at a time when we needed it most,” said DelBello. “He was of enormous help to us in setting up the criteria and standards of good newspapermanship that we still follow today.”

Raymond died due to complications from lymphoma; he was 88. We are grateful for his lasting imprint on our pages.

He will be missed.

USA Today recognizes Gilda’s Club

As part of USA Today’s 25th anniversary celebration, the newspaper recognized Gilda’s Club Worldwide as one of its Top 25 Charities. Gilda’s club, named for Saturday Night Live alumnae Gilda Radner, is dedicated to providing social and emotional support for people living with cancer, their family and friends. The Westchester/Fairfield County branch is at 80 Maple Ave. in White Plains and has 1,000 active members. Gilda’s Club was recognized along with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Special Olympics, American Red Cross and the Humane Society of the United States.
