Summer’s bounty

Saturdays at the Hartsdale Metro-North train station, Westchester Greenhouse and Farms, at 332 West Hartsdale Ave., puts forth its bounty at a farmers’ market. The market is managed by Carol Avila and complements similar Westchester Greenhouse and Farms’ markets in Tuckahoe, Eastchester and Dobbs Ferry. Westchester Greenhouse and Farms sells to restaurants, but relies on the markets as one of its main sources of income.

Bye, Bye Birdie

Sadly, our nation lost another great figure this month with the death of former first lady Claudia Alta Taylor (Lady Bird) Johnson. Staff members at Westchester Community College remember fondly her visit to the Valhalla campus in 1999 to dedicate the Lady Bird Johnson Demonstration Garden. “We dedicated a garden to her,” said college spokesman Patrick Hennessey, who attended the event. “Everyone here was very excited to have someone of that stature. It was an electric event and highly enjoyed by everyone.” Though she was not the first celebrity figure to visit the college over the years, said Hennessey, “she was one of the highlights.” “She was such an intelligent person, so gentle and charming. She really lived up to our expectations.” Brooke Beebe, director of the Native Plant Center at the college, was also at the event. “She was a great lady, a great inspiration for us,” said Beebe. “We hope to bring her vision and her dedication to the environment to the North East with the Native Plant Center. Shake it up!

The music was pumping and seniors were shaking to get fit as Shayna, professional belly dancer and owner of Shayna's Solution, taught Willow Towers residents in New Rochelle how to belly dance a form of exercise that works for all ages, body shapes and sizes by improving circulation and joint flexibility, and serving as a low-impact form of exercise. “It's so important for me to work with these seniors,” said Shayna. “To see them smile is so rewarding. It brings a little excitement, maybe a little Las Vegas to their lives.” Seniors wore colorful coin hip-scarves as they learned basic belly dancing moves. Shayna, a 53-year-old grandmother of two, started belly dancing at age 46 and has been working with seniors at Willow Towers for the past two years. “If it could work for me it could work for anyone,” she said. “I can go from here to teaching 90-year-olds to teaching 20-year-olds. My life is balanced. I love it.” So did the audience. Seniors danced, moved and genuinely enjoyed the show. “She's wonderful,”

Hats off to Scarsdale, Chappaqua, Briarcliff Manor and Eastchester
Topping Money Magazine’s ‘Best’ List

Money Magazine has just announced the 25 Top-Earning Towns in the nation and three of them are in our own Westchester County.

With a median household income of $219,317 and median home price of $1.52 million Scarsdale came in at … drum-role please … number two.

The article mentioned Butler Woods and exclusive Scarsdale Platform Tennis Club (the first of its kind in the world) as well as notable Scarsdalians, including Liza Minnelli and mom Judy Garland, Beatles wives Linda McCartney and Yoko Ono and 19th-century author James Fenimore Cooper.

Chappaqua was number five on the list with a median household income of $189,741 and median home price of $1.04 million.

The article mentioned who else Bill and Hillary and described the population this way: “Residents are typically white-collar types who send their kids to Horace Greeley High School and expect them to get accepted to the nation’s most prestigious universities.”

Briarcliff Manor came in at 19 on the list with a median household income of $157,880 and median home price of $911,300. The article mentioned the quality of schools, Trump National Golf Course and the town’s period street lighting and brick sidewalks.

The town of Eastchester made a different list by ranking in the top 100 Best Places to Live with a median income of $112,180 while the Best Places average is $90,316.
