Foggy Bottom Follies, Part ???

The entire immigration morass got us thinking about two disparate individuals from recent American history; cowboy humorist Will Rogers and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart.

Each had opinions on issues that could be applied to today’s ever-growing mess.

Rogers was a man of many opinions when it came to politics and the people in Congress.

We think his views hold up today:

“Ancient Rome declined because it had a Senate; now what’s going to happen to us with both a Senate and a House?”

“This country has come to feel the same when Congress is in session as when the baby gets hold of a hammer.”

• “Our constitution protects aliens, drunks and U.S. Senators.”

As to who’s an alien and who isn’t, perhaps we should take up the view of Stewart, who when ruling on obscenity in 1964, said he can’t define it, but he knows it when he sees it.

Sort of like Congress; they can’t reach a consensus on an immigration law, but they each have an opinion on what should be in it.

Maybe Congress should just let go of the entire immigration legislation and leave it up to the individual municipalities to address it. Just look at what the Green Bay City Council did last week.

The council passed an ordinance that states if any city business hires illegal immigrants it could have its licenses, contracts and other grants taken away. That’s right, the economy is booming so well right now that we should punish business. But according to new reports, the council may have had a different agenda in mind than just illegal immigrants; liquor license renewals.

One alderman who opposed the measure offered sarcastically: “Let the witch hunt begin.”

First in the council’s gun sights was a bar by the name of Carnitas Guanajuato, which just happens to be owned by an opponent of the immigration measure.

“You say tomato, I say to-mahto, let’s call the whole thing off.”
