Deadline nears for federal nor’easter aid

With a filing deadline one week away, nine out of 10 businesses registered as April flood victims with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have not sought the disaster recovery loans for which they are eligible.

Businesses have until June 25 to complete applications for low-interest, long-term loans with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). Insurance claims for losses sustained in the nor’easter of April 14-18 do not have to be settled and business damage estimates are not needed in order to apply.

In Westchester County, SBA spokesman Carl W. Sherrill said the agency had approved $3,788,000 in disaster recovery loans for 30 businesses and a $117,900 loan to a nonprofit organization as of June 12. Loans covered both physical property damage and owners’ fixed costs until they can recover, he said.

Business owners needing assistance can meet with an SBA representative at these locations: the village of Mamaroneck offices, 123 Mamaroneck Ave., Mamaroneck; Mamaroneck Senior Citizens Center, 740 W. Boston Post Road, Mamaroneck; New Rochelle Emergency Operations Center, 90 Beaufort Place, New Rochelle; and Eastchester Public Library, 11 Oakridge Place, Eastchester.

Persons can also call the SBA help line at (800) 659-2955.

In the flood-stricken lower Hudson Valley, SBA officials also have approved two business loans totaling $129,400 in Dutchess County; one business loan of $39,000 in Orange County; two business loans totaling $380,700 in Rockland County; and two business loans totaling $54,800 in Ulster County.
